JMU at Virginia Gold Cup
Get out your sundresses and seersucker, the MetroDukes are going to Virginia Gold Cup! Included in every ticket is roundtrip bus transportation to Great Meadows in The Plains, VA where your own private tent party along the rail awaits! Spend the day watching the horses fly by in one of the many steeplechase races while munching on the catered buffet and grabbing drinks from the open bar.

JMU at Virginia Gold Cup Event FAQs

What is the Virginia Gold Cup?


The Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase races are a grand spring tradition as well as a fixture on the social calendar in Virginia. Run in Fauquier County since 1922 and attended by over 50,000 spectators, this race is one of the largest and most popular sporting events in the greater Washington metropolitan area. Race day features six hurdle and timber horses races, Jack Russell Terrier races, tent, tailgate and hat contests, and over 30 vendor booths for shopping.


What should I wear?


Several different attires are found at the races. Men's attire ranges from comfy khakis and blazers to classy suits and ties. Ladies attire ranges from sundresses and extravagant hats to slacks and a nice top. Whatever attire you decide is sure to mesh with the crowd. Please remember that races run rain or shine so extra outerwear is advised. The area is fully turf therefore stiletto and spike heels are not advised. We recommend flats or wedge high heels for the ladies!


Is the event only for JMU alums?


Like any JMU party, everyone is welcome! If you have friends that want to come but didn't go to JMU - no problem! Just pass them the sales link when you get it! We will advertise the sales link here, on Twitter, through the JMU at Virginia Gold Cup facebook group, the MetroDukes Facebook page, the MetroDukes website, and a MetroDukes e-mail when sales go live.


What if it rains?


We go rain or shine! We don't oversell our tent, so there will be space under the cover for everyone.

What if I want to drive myself?


All tickets include roundtrip bus transportation and no discount is offered for driving yourself. However, we do have a limited quantity of car passes that will be available free of charge.


How can I go to this event for half off?


Volunteer! We need a small number of volunteers to help with check-in in the morning and loading the buses in the morning and afternoon. If things go smoothly, you'll be the first on our list to contact when we need volunteers next year. Just e-mail JMUatVGC@gmail.com with VOLUNTEER in the subject line for more information.
